What to Write in a Communion or Confirmation Card in Ireland
Messages from parents, grandparents and godparents, religious and not, plus Irish blessings that are actually correct

Short answer
Name the child, say you are proud, and close with a blessing or wish. For a Communion: "So proud of you today, Aoife. May God bless you on your First Holy Communion." For a Confirmation, use a slightly more grown-up tone: "May your faith be your strength." Three to five sentences is plenty.

What to write in a Communion or Confirmation card depends on three things: how close you are to the child, how religious you and the family are, and how much you actually want to say. Most people overthink all three. The card that gets kept is rarely the most eloquent one, it is the one that sounds like the person who signed it.

So this guide is the answer we usually give, laid out properly: messages for both occasions, sorted by who you are to the child, with the Irish wording checked rather than guessed.
How Religious Should the Message Be?
Write a religious message when
- The family is practising and the day is a genuinely sacramental occasion for them
- You are a godparent, since the role itself is a promise about faith
- You are a grandparent and a blessing is how you would naturally say it
- The card will be kept in a prayer book or missal, which many are
Keep it warm and secular when
- You are a neighbour, a teacher or a family friend and do not know how devout the family is
- The day is being marked mainly as a family milestone and a party
- You are not religious yourself. A borrowed blessing reads as borrowed
- You would rather send a gift than a card, in which case a keepsake gift carries the day better
First Holy Communion Card Messages
First Holy Communion in Ireland is usually made around age seven or eight, so the message wants to be warm and readable by the child themselves. Grand language goes over their head. Plain pride does not.
Religious Communion messages
- "May God bless you on this special day and always. Wishing you a beautiful First Holy Communion."
- "Today you receive Jesus for the first time. May this day fill your heart with faith and joy that stays with you always."
- "May your faith be a light that guides you through every day of your life. God bless you on your First Holy Communion."
Warm but less religious
- "Congratulations on your First Holy Communion. What a wonderful day for you and for your whole family."
- "So proud of you today. Wishing you the most special First Communion celebration."
- "You have worked so hard for today, and you deserve every bit of how wonderful it feels."
Short messages for a neighbour or family friend
- "God bless you on your special day."
- "Wishing you a beautiful First Communion and a lovely day with your family."
- "May this day stay in your heart forever."
Confirmation Card Messages
Confirmation happens around twelve to fourteen, which changes everything about the tone. This is a young person making a choice rather than a small child being brought along. Anything that reads as babyish will be quietly resented. Write to them as the person they are turning into.
Religious Confirmation messages
- "May the gifts of the Holy Spirit guide and strengthen you always. Congratulations on your Confirmation."
- "Today you make your faith your own. May it be a source of courage, comfort and joy throughout your life."
- "May your faith be your strength, and may you always know how loved you are."
Warm but non-religious
- "Congratulations on reaching this milestone. We are so proud of the person you are becoming."
- "Congratulations on your Confirmation. May this be the start of a wonderful new chapter."
- "Whatever you choose to believe as you grow, we will always be proud of you. Congratulations on your Confirmation day."
Messages by Relationship
From parents
- "Today is one of the most special days of your life and we are so unbelievably proud of you. Watching you grow in faith and kindness has been one of the greatest joys of ours."
- "You have worked so hard for today. We love you to the moon and back. Happy First Communion, our precious girl."
From grandparents
- "We have loved you since your very first breath, and watching you today fills our hearts with more joy than we can say. May God bless and keep you always."
- "God bless you, pet. You have made us all so proud. With all our love from Nana and Grandad."
- "What a proud day for all of us. We are thinking of you with so much love and sending every blessing on your special day."
From a godparent
- "Being your godparent is one of the greatest privileges of my life. Today I am so proud of the kind person you are becoming. I will always be here for you."
- "From the day you were baptised I promised to walk with you in faith. Today is a moment I will carry with me forever."
From an aunt, uncle or family friend
- "We are so proud of you today. You are one of our favourite people in the whole world, and watching you grow has been the best thing."
- "Today is your day and you deserve every bit of it. With all our love from Auntie and Uncle."
- "Wishing you a beautiful day and a great celebration with your family."
Irish Blessings and Bilingual Wording
Irish suits these two occasions better than almost any other. These phrases are standard and safe to write. Always put the English translation underneath, so the child and the parents can read what you have said.
- Go mbeannaigh Dia thú May God bless you. The most useful one, on its own or as a closing line.
- Beannacht Dé ort God's blessing on you. Slightly softer, lovely from a grandparent.
- Go raibh Dia leat i ngach áit a ghabhas tú May God be with you wherever you go. Suits a Confirmation particularly well.
- Comhghairdeas Congratulations. Works as an opener for either occasion.
- Le grá With love. The simplest way to sign off as Gaeilge.
A bilingual message that works for either day: "Go mbeannaigh Dia thú ar an lá speisiúlta seo. May God bless you on this special day." We also make Irish language cards where the front is already as Gaeilge, so the inside is yours entirely.

What do you write in a First Holy Communion card in Ireland?
Acknowledge the day, say you are proud, and close with a blessing or wish. For example: "So proud of you today. May God bless you on your First Holy Communion." Use the child's name and keep it to three to five sentences so they can read it themselves.
What should I write in a Confirmation card?
Write to a young adult, not a child. Combine pride with encouragement: "We are so proud of the person you are becoming. May your faith guide and strengthen you always." Mentioning their Confirmation name or their sponsor makes it more personal.
What if I am not religious myself?
Say something true instead of borrowing a blessing. "Congratulations on reaching this milestone, we are so proud of you" is warm, respectful and completely appropriate. A message that sounds like you is always better than one that sounds like a prayer card.
What is the difference between a Communion and a Confirmation card?
A Communion card marks a child's first reception of the Eucharist at around seven or eight, with softer imagery. A Confirmation card marks a young person affirming their faith at twelve to fourteen and suits a more restrained design and a more grown-up tone.
Can I write an Irish blessing in the card?
Yes, and it suits these occasions well. "Go mbeannaigh Dia thú" means may God bless you, and "Comhghairdeas" means congratulations. Write the English translation directly underneath so the child and the family can read exactly what you have written.
