There is a particular silence that happens on Christmas morning when somebody is handed a phone. The wrapping is finished, the floor is covered in paper, and the biggest present of the lot turns out to be a booking confirmation being scrolled through by three people at once while somebody says, no, keep going, it is further down.
An experience is a wonderful thing to give and an awkward thing to hand over. A hotel break is a reference number. A trip to Disneyland is an email. A gig at the 3Arena will not even release the ticket until the week of the show. So the fix, and we watch families arrive at it every December, is to stop making the booking be the present. Give them something to open that carries the news, and sort the booking out afterwards.
Most of what comes through the studio in December names a place rather than an event. Half of Ireland, it seems, is quietly giving each other somewhere to go.
Is a Christmas Reveal Right for Your Gift?
Not every experience needs the ceremony, and we would rather tell you that than sell you a card you did not need. Here is roughly how it splits.
Worth doing when
- The gift is a booking or a date in a diary with nothing physical attached to it
- It is the main present and you want the moment to match what it cost you
- Children are opening it, where the build-up is genuinely half the gift
- Somebody will be filming. Foil catches the light, which is why these end up on WhatsApp
Honestly, skip it when
- Nothing is booked yet. Never reveal a trip you have not actually paid for
- It is a small extra rather than the main event, where a personalised Christmas card does the job for less
- It is already the 20th. Something handwritten now beats something perfect that lands on the 27th
- The date might still move, in which case name the place and leave the date off
Which Reveal Suits Which Experience?
This is less about the trip than about the person. A scratch panel stretches a two second handover into thirty seconds of guessing, which is where the good reaction lives. Hand that same card to a quiet adult in front of fourteen relatives and you have made them perform. Match it to the room.
If it is a trip to Disneyland
Go with the kids trip reveal, which is shaped like a boarding pass with the departure airport and the duration printed on it. Children do not read a card so much as recognise it, and the ticket shape does the work before they have finished the first line. Expect it to be carried around the house for the rest of the day.
If it is a hotel or a spa break
The foil gift voucher names the hotel on the front, so there is no puzzle to solve and no audience required. This is the one people give across the kitchen table on Christmas Eve rather than in the middle of the room, and it suits a partner far better than anything that needs scratching.
If it is a holiday abroad
Hide it. The scratch reveal puts their name large on the front, pack your bags underneath, and the destination under the foil panel. Nobody has ever guessed right, in our experience. They guess Spain. It is never Spain.
If it is dinner out or something with food
The dinner reveal card has Santa in gold foil and the restaurant named underneath, and it reads as an invitation rather than a voucher. That distinction matters more than it sounds, particularly with parents and grandparents, who will accept an invitation and feel awkward about a voucher.
If it is concert or festival tickets

When Should I Order for Christmas?
The honest answer is earlier than feels necessary, because December post in Ireland is the slowest of the year, every year, without fail. Everything here is made to order and leaves us within 1 to 2 working days, but An Post is the part neither of us controls.
The moment to sort it is the day you book. Screenshot the confirmation while it is in front of you, because the exact spelling of the hotel or the park is the detail people get wrong three weeks later. Early December is the comfortable window. Mid December is the last point we would risk it ourselves for delivery inside Ireland, and after that we would rather say no than promise something we cannot land.
Then, on Christmas Eve, put it somewhere it will be found last rather than first. A card that gets opened third out of eleven disappears into the pile.
How to Do the Reveal on Christmas Morning
Four things, learned mostly from customers telling us afterwards what worked.
Save it until the floor is clear
The last present of the morning gets the whole room. The same card opened halfway through gets a nod and then somebody asks about the batteries for something else.
Wrap it wrong on purpose
A flat card at the bottom of a shoebox with a jumper folded on top of it. Two seconds of very polite disappointment, then the turn. This is the single best trick anybody has told us about and it costs nothing.
Have the camera running before you hand it over
Propped against something, recording, before anyone touches the card. You cannot ask for that face a second time, and nobody has ever regretted having the video.
Give them something to hold as well
Ears for Disneyland, a guidebook for a city break, thick socks for a winter cottage. It gives their hands something to do while the news lands, which sounds like a small thing and is not. And if you are scratching a panel, leave a coin in the box. Fingernails do not work.

Worth saying plainly: a printed email in a nice envelope with a proper handwritten note is a perfectly good Christmas gift. If it is the 22nd, that is the right answer and we would tell you so on the phone.

When is the last day to order for Christmas in Ireland?
Order by mid December to be comfortable. Everything is made to order in our Cork studio and dispatched in 1 to 2 working days, with An Post delivery on top, and December post is the slowest of the year. Later than that and we cannot promise it arrives in time.
What if the trip date changes after Christmas?
The card still stands as the record of the gift. If the booking looks like it might move, ask us to print the destination and the name only and leave the date off. We cannot reprint free of charge once a card has been made, so it is worth deciding before you order.
Can I put any destination or event on the card?
Yes. The designs take any destination, venue, date and message, whether that is Disneyland Paris, a hotel in Kerry, a gig at the 3Arena or dinner in Cork city. Copy the spelling from your booking confirmation, since that is the detail people most often get wrong.
