What Is a Foil Print Card? (And Is the Foil Real Metal?)

How to tell real hot foil from printed shimmer, which finish suits which occasion, and when a foil card is the wrong buy

By Natali, Printarelle · Handmade in Mallow, Co. Cork · Updated August 2026

Short answer

A foil print card is a card where part of the design is a thin layer of real metallic film bonded to the surface by heat, not printed ink. Printarelle presses foil by hand in Mallow, Co. Cork on 300gsm stock. Foil greeting cards from €3.99, personalised foil keepsakes from €8.00, dispatched in 1 to 2 working days.

Afoil print card is the one people pick up off the mantelpiece months later, because real foil keeps catching light long after the ink on an ordinary card has gone flat. The word foil gets used loosely online, though, and plenty of cards sold as foil in Ireland are printed sparkle with no metal in them at all. This guide explains the difference so you know what you are paying for.

The clearest test is one you can do without touching the card. Real foil behaves like a mirror: tilt it and the light travels across the letters in a hard bright line. Printed shimmer scatters instead, so it twinkles softly and looks much the same from every angle. In our Mallow studio, the foil is the last thing applied and the one step that cannot be rushed, because the heat has to be right for the stock or the metal simply will not take.

What the Foil on a Foil Print Card Actually Is

The foil is a thin metallic film, usually aluminium based, carried on a plastic backing sheet. Heat and pressure release it from that backing wherever it makes contact, and it bonds permanently to the card underneath. The trade name for the process is hot foil stamping. Nothing is printed: the metal is physically transferred, which is why the finish is reflective rather than sparkly, and why it will not rub away with handling.

Is a Foil Card Right for Your Gift?

Choose a foil card when

  • The card is the gift, or it is announcing one
  • You want it kept rather than recycled in January
  • A name, date or venue is being foiled, so the detail matters
  • It will sit on a shelf or in a frame where light hits it

Choose something else when

  • You need thirty for a class or an office, where plain personalised greeting cards cost far less per head
  • The moment needs hiding until it is opened, where a scratch card does the job better
  • You are photographing it under a hard flash, which blows out reflective foil
  • You want wall art rather than a card, where prints and wall art suit better

Which Foil Colour for Which Occasion

Foil colour is not decoration alone, it changes how loud the card reads. Gold is warm and formal, silver is quieter and more modern, and holographic is the one that makes teenagers actually react. The rough rule we use in the studio: match the foil to the room the card will end up in, not to the wrapping paper.

How to Keep and Display a Foil Card

Angle it, do not face itFoil looks dull pointed straight at a room. Turn it 20 or 30 degrees towards a window and the lettering lights up.
Frame it without glassGlass adds a second reflection that fights the foil. A clip frame or a small easel keeps the metal readable.
Pair it with the ticketA foil keepsake is what people keep once the digital ticket has expired. See the concert foil keepsakes.
Photograph it side onFlash directly on foil blows out to a white blank. Daylight from the side is what makes it photograph well.

Questions We Get Asked

Is the foil on a foil print card real metal?

Yes. On a genuine foil card the foil is a thin layer of real metallic film bonded to the card by heat and pressure. That is different from digital glitter or shimmer, which is ink printed onto the surface with no metal layer and no mirror-like reflection.

Will the foil rub off or scratch?

Not with normal handling. The foil is bonded to the stock, so it does not flake the way printed shimmer can. A sharp edge dragged across it can mark it, so keep the card in its sleeve until you give it and avoid stacking loose keys on top.

How long does a personalised foil card take to arrive?

Foil is made to order, so personalised cards leave the studio within 1 to 2 working days and travel with An Post. For a fixed date, order about a week ahead. That leaves room for a spelling correction without anyone panicking.

Can a name be foiled, or only the decoration?

Names, dates, venues and short messages can all be foiled, not just the decorative parts. Fadas are set properly rather than dropped, so an Irish name comes out as it should. Very long messages work better printed, since dense small text loses definition in metal.
