What to Write in a New Baby Card
Messages for every relationship, funny lines, twins, and Irish blessings that are actually correct

Short answer
Write three to five sentences: congratulate the parents by name, welcome the baby by name if you know it, and close with one specific wish. Something like "Welcome to the world, Saoirse. Congratulations to you both, you are going to be wonderful at this." Warm and short beats long and formal every time.

Knowing what to write in a new baby card is harder than it should be, mostly because the moment is so big and the space inside the card is so small. A new baby card gets read in a very particular kind of chaos: exhausted, overwhelmed, and more in love than anyone was prepared for. The right message meets the parents there rather than performing at them.
Here is my honest opinion after years of making these cards in our studio in Mallow, Co. Cork: the messages people agonise over are almost never the ones that get kept. The kept ones are short, specific and slightly awkward, because they sound like a real person wrote them. That is the whole trick, and everything below is built around it.
Is a New Baby Card the Right Thing to Send?
Send a card when
- The baby has arrived and you want to mark it properly rather than with a text
- You live far from the parents and post is the only way to be present
- You are visiting and want something to hand over with a gift
- You want to say something the parents can read again in six months
Choose something else when
- You are announcing the pregnancy rather than responding to a birth, where a scratch reveal card does the job better
- You want something that lives on the wall, where a personalised nursery print is the better keepsake
- The birth was complicated or the news is delicate. In that case send a short message now and a card later, when you know how they are
- You are contributing to a christening or welcome party, where welcome baby favours suit the table better
What Tone and Length Should I Use?
The rule is simple: the closer you are, the more specific you get. A colleague needs warmth and brevity. A sister needs you to say the thing you would only say to her. Match the length to the relationship rather than to how much space the card has, and stop when you have said the true thing.

Short messages that always work

- "Sending so much love to your growing family. Wishing you health, rest and wonder in equal measure."
For first-time parents
- "Welcome to the world, little one, you are already so loved. Congratulations to you both on the most wonderful news."
- "You were made for this, even on the days it does not feel that way. Congratulations."
- "A baby is here. You have just become someone's whole world. We cannot wait to meet them."
From grandparents
- "We have waited for you, and now that you are here our hearts are completely full. Welcome to the family. All our love from Nana and Grandad."

From close friends and siblings
- "I cried when you told me. The best kind of tears. You deserve every beautiful second of this."
- "I have been watching you your whole life and I know exactly how much love you have to give. Welcome to the world, little one."
- "I am here for all of it: the hard days, the impossible days, and the days so good you will not be able to put them into words."
Funny messages
- "Congratulations. People who say they sleep like a baby clearly do not have one."
- "So tiny, so perfect, so ready to completely run your lives."
- "May your coffee be strong and your baby's naps be long."
- "You are officially outnumbered. Congratulations, we are all so in love with them already."
One rule with a funny card: always land it with a warm line at the end. A joke on its own reads as a shrug, and this is not the moment for a shrug.
For twins, and when you do not know the sex
- "Two arrivals, twice the joy, twice the chaos and twice the love. Congratulations on your beautiful pair."
- "You have been given two at once. The universe clearly thought you could handle it."
- "Congratulations on your new arrival, wishing you all the joy and sleep you deserve."
- "A new little person in the world, and in your family. So much love to you all."
Irish Blessings for a New Baby Card
An Irish phrase adds something a standard message cannot. These are all standard Irish and safe to write in a card. If you are not a fluent speaker, pair the Irish with the English underneath rather than guessing at a longer sentence.
- Leanbh nua New baby. The phrase on the cover of our Irish new baby card.
- Comhghairdeas Congratulations, pronounced roughly "ko-gar-juss". Works alone or as an opener.
- Beannacht leat Blessings with you. Short, warm, and hard to get wrong.
- Go méadaí Dia thú May God increase you. A traditional Irish wish for a newborn.
- Go mbeire sibh beo ar an am seo arís May you all be alive at this time again. A blessing for the whole new family.

What do you write in a new baby card?
Congratulate the parents, welcome the baby, and add one specific wish. For example: "Welcome to the world, little one, you are already so loved. Congratulations to you both on the most wonderful news." Three to five sentences is plenty. Use the baby's name if you know it.
What should I write for first-time parents?
First-time parents need encouragement more than congratulation. Try: "You were made for this, even on the days it does not feel that way." Acknowledge what they have just done rather than only the baby who has arrived. It is the line most often read twice.
What do you write if you do not know the baby's sex or name?
Keep it general and warm. "Congratulations on your new arrival, wishing you all the joy and sleep you deserve" works for any baby. "Little one" and "little [family surname]" are both affectionate stand-ins that never sound like you were guessing.
Is it too late to send a card weeks after the birth?
Not at all. Cards arrive in a rush in the first fortnight and then stop, which is exactly when the tiredness peaks. A card at six weeks lands in a quiet week and is often the one that gets kept. Say so in the message and it reads as thoughtful, not late.
What is congratulations in Irish?
Comhghairdeas, pronounced roughly "ko-gar-juss". It stands alone or opens a longer message. Leanbh nua means new baby, and Beannacht leat means blessings with you. Pair the Irish with English underneath if you are not a fluent speaker.
